Fortnite Battle Pass Skins: How the Pass Works and the Outfits That Defined It

Fortnite Battle Pass skins are the outfits earned by levelling a season's pass, and since 18 March 2026 the pass costs 800 V-Bucks, returns 800 V-Bucks if completed, and no longer pays out the extra 500 bonus V-Bucks it used to. The current pass is Chapter 7 Season 4 "Override", which runs from 20 August to 31 October 2026 and contains eight outfits. This guide explains how the pass works after the March change, which pass outfits stay exclusive, what Override contains, and which pass rewards across seven chapters the full catalog treats as landmarks.
How the pass works in 2026
The Battle Pass costs 800 V-Bucks — reduced from 1,000 on 18 March 2026 at the same moment the V-Bucks bundles shrank — and a player who finishes it earns 800 V-Bucks back, which is exactly enough for the next one. Before March, the pass cost 1,000 and returned 1,500 when its bonus rewards were included; the 500-V-Bucks surplus that used to fund a shop outfit each season is gone. The OG Pass, LEGO Pass and Music Pass each dropped 200 V-Bucks in price at the same time, and all four passes are included in Fortnite Crew at $11.99 a month.
Progress is by levels earned through play and quests, and the pass is usually organised in pages that unlock as you level. A pass's main track runs to roughly level 100 with bonus styles beyond it, and a player who logs in most weeks and clears the weekly quests finishes the main track with room to spare; a player who starts in the last fortnight generally does not, because the levels are the same size at the end as at the start. Buying levels with V-Bucks is possible but is the worst value in the game — it pays full price for outfits the pass would have given you for playing. Outfits come with selectable styles that unlock at later levels, which is why so many pass outfits have "progressive" designs — Drift, Calamity and Lynx all start plain and end elaborate. The V-Bucks pricing guide puts the pass beside the bundles in dollar terms.
Which pass skins stay exclusive
Every Battle Pass outfit from Chapter 1 Season 1 through Chapter 5 Season 3 remains exclusive to the players who earned it, and per Epic's stated policy as reported, pass outfits from Chapter 5 Season 4 onward may return to the shop at least eighteen months after their season ends. That rule is the reason Drift, Midas and Black Knight cannot be bought and never will be, and it is why so many outfits on our best Fortnite skins ranking are pass rewards. The nearest thing to an exception is a remix: Fortnite OG's Season 9 pass offered a remixed Rox, a new outfit rather than the Season 9 original, and no pre-Chapter-5 pass original has returned.
Chapter 7 Season 4 "Override": the current pass
Override launched on 20 August 2026 and ends on 31 October 2026, and its pass holds eight outfits: K1tty W1ns, Phantom, Grace Crowne, Geno, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mali, Wrixel and Bastian. It is the first pass to include Sonic, and the season's gaming theme continues in the shop with Mega Man, Mega Man X and Zero, which were added to the cosmetics API on 7 September 2026 as shop outfits rather than pass rewards. Wrixel, the block-built original, is the pass outfit the API added first, on 21 August, and is our pick of the eight for design.

CrewC7 · S4The landmark pass outfits, season by season
Chapter 1's passes set the pattern of a tier-1 outfit you get immediately and a tier-100 outfit you grind for. Black Knight at tier 70 of Season 2 was the first pass outfit players treated as a trophy; The Reaper (Season 3, tier 100) and Omega (Season 4, tier 100) made the top slot a suit of armour; Drift (Season 5, tier 1), Calamity (Season 6, tier 1) and Lynx (Season 7, tier 1) turned the first slot into the star with progressive styles; and Peely, mid-pass in Season 8, proved a pass outfit could be a mascot.
Chapter 2 moved the star to the top. Midas at tier 100 of Chapter 2 Season 2 is still the most-cited pass reward in the game, with Meowscles and Skye from the same pass close behind; Doctor Slone closed Chapter 2 Season 7 at tier 100. Chapter 3 opened with The Foundation on page 10 of Season 1 and Spider-Man in the same pass, Chapter 5 Season 1 delivered Peter Griffin and Solid Snake alongside originals Oscar, Hope and Nisha, and every chapter since has mixed a licensed headline with four or five originals — the pattern Override follows with Sonic.

LegendaryC5 · S1How pass outfits sit in the catalog
Pass outfits are filed by tier like everything else, and the tiers show what the pass is for: most pass outfits are Epic, the tier-100 and tier-1 stars are Legendary, and licensed pass outfits carry their series label — Spider-Man is Marvel Series, Solid Snake is Gaming Legends, Darth Vader from Chapter 3 Season 3 is Star Wars. The pass is also the single largest source of the catalog's Legendary tier: of the 140 Legendaries counted on 9 September 2026, the majority were pass tier-100 or tier-1 rewards rather than shop items.
That concentration is the reason the pass is worth more than its price. Shop outfits are designed to sell in a day; pass outfits are designed to be worn for ten weeks and unlocked in stages, and the cool skins gallery is three-quarters pass rewards as a result. If you buy one thing a season, buy the pass — and if you will not play the season, buy nothing and wait for the shop outfit you actually want.
